Gerke Completes CMU Master Class

2016 Apr 28

Levi Gerke completed the voice master class at Central Methodist University.

This was part of a two day master class offering through the Swinney Conservatory of Music on the CMU campus. Gerke is a music major from Pilot Grove.

On Monday, April 25, Professor Emerita in Voice Ann Harrell from the University of Missouri - Columbia lead the master class in vocal performance. It is sponsored by CMU's SNATS chapter-Student National Association of Teachers of Singing.

The second class was for students of flute and/or piccolo on Tuesday, April 26. This class was taught by Ann Choomack who plays flute and piccolo with the St. Louis Symphony.

Harrell teaches voice to graduate and undergraduate voice majors, plus vocal pedagogy. Four of her students have reflected professionally the talent, skills, and work ethic she inspires; one won the television show "America's Got Talent" in 2008.

She has received multiple awards as a teacher, including the Purple Chalk Teaching Award in 1997, the Provost's Outstanding Junior Faculty Teaching Award in 1998, and a Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in 2014.

Choomack performed with the Richmond Symphony from 2004-13. She spends her summers as a faculty member of the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, N.C.

She graduated from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., and got her master's degree at New England Conservatory in Boston. She has also performed in numerous music festivals, including the National Repertory Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center.
