Nelson in CMU's A Valentine Toast to Opera and Musicals

McKenna Nelson is a cast member in the upcoming show at Central Methodist University titled "A Valentine Toast to Opera and Musicals." The show will feature an international evening of operetta, opera and musicals performed in a variety of styles.

Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 11-13 and at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 in the Willie Mae Kountz Recital Hall. General admission is $7; seniors, CMU staff and faculty, $5; and students with ID, $2. For ticket information, call 660-248-6317.

The production will open with romantic and celebratory scenes from Viennese operettas "Die Fledermaus" and "The Merry Window." These will be followed by scenes from Italian operas "The Elixir of Love" and "La Cenerentola" and French duets and arias, including "Carmen," "Lakme" and "The Pearlfishers."

The evening of music will conclude with selections from American musicals such as "The Most Happy Fella," "Fiddler of the Roof," "Guys and Dolls," "Hello Dolly," "The Music Man" and a salute to George Gershwin with scenes from the popular American folk opera "Porgy and Bess."

The production is being directed by Dr. Susan Quigley-Duggan, associate professor of music and head of the opera program. Costuming is by Terri Rohlfing.
