Smith is a Member of the CMU Concert Band

Aiden Smith is a member of the Concert Band at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. Smith is a Vocal Performance / Vocal Music Education major from Waynesville.

On March 5, the Concert Band of Central Methodist University boards a bus for its yearly six-day tour around Missouri, performing for schools and in churches.

While the school concerts are closed to the general public, the concerts in churches are open to the public and are free to attend.

Leading the 58-student Concert Band on this, its 89th annual tour, is Roy "Skip" Vandelicht, CMU assistant professor of music and director of bands. A 1977 graduate of Central, Vandelicht joined CMU's Swinney Conservatory of Music fulltime in 2008 after teaching 31 years in the Fayette School District.

The repertoire for the tour comprises marches and longer band pieces, several with soloists from the band. Marches are "The Washington Post" (Sousa), "The Klaxton" (Fillmore), "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite" (King), "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (Sousa), and "Valdres" (Hanssen).

Soloists include junior Wayne Brown (music education, St. Charles) in "Fantasy for Trumpet" by Claude T. Smith, Central alumnus from 1954; senior Ann Marie Pelley (music education , St. Peters) in "Trumpet Concerto, Movement 3" by Johann Hummel;

senior Pam Crawford on flute (music education, Columbia) in "Czardas" by Vittorio Monti; and senior Sam Gaddy (music education, Alma), a percussionist, in "Statement for Timpani and Wind Ensemble" by Keith Larson.

Additional music pieces in the band's repertoire are "Emperata Overture" by Claude T. Smith; "American Overture for Band" by Willcox, "Ride" by Hazo; "The Irish Washerwoman" by Anderson; "America the Beautiful" arranged by Carmen Dragon; "Fanfare and Dance Segments" by Barrett, "J.S. Jig," by Karrick;

"Viva Grana!" setting by Josh Myers (CMU graduate of 2002); "Friska" arranged by Andrew Glover (CMU graduate of 1983); "O Magnum Mysterium" by Lauridsen; and "Senus Vitae" by Daughtrey.

The tour will include open performances at Memphis Theatre in Memphis, Mo., Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m.; St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Florissant at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, and again at both services at St. Andrew UMC at 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 8;

St. Mark's UMC in Florissant at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 8; and Sullivan High School in Sullivan at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 9.

During the school day, the band will perform for Moberly High School, Kirksville High School, Paris High School, Francis Howell High School in St. Charles, Festus High School, North County High School in Bonne Terre, Sullivan High School, Pacific High School, and Centralia High School.

The Concert Band returns to Fayette late Tuesday, March 10; its home concert will be Sunday, March 22, at 4 p.m. in Linn Memorial UMC on the Fayette campus of Central Methodist University.
