Weigand in Upcoming Opera Series at CMU

2016 May 17

Denise Weigand, from Weatherby, will be performing in 'A Grand Night For Singing,' an American musical showcase at Central Methodist University this summer.

"A Grand Night for Singing," a showcase of popular American songs from musicals by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein will be presented early in June at Central Methodist University as part of its annual summer light opera series under the direction of Dr. Susan Quigley-Duggan.

Performances will be given on Friday, Saturday and Sunday June 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. at Willie Mae Kountz Recital Hall in the Swinney Conservatory on CMU's Fayette campus.

The public is invited to all performances. Tickets are $7 and $5 for seniors. They may be reserved in advance by calling 660-248-6317

Music to be performed includes selections from "Carousel," "Oklahoma," "South Pacific," "The King and I" and "The Sound of Music." Rodgers wrote the music and Hammerstein was the lyricist. The performance will also include other works by George Gershwin primarily and other American composers from that era, the 1940s through 1960s.

Quigley-Duggan, associate professor of music and director of the opera program, has directed a summer opera program at CMU since coming to Central in 2006.

Conservatory staff member Janet O'Neill will provide piano accompaniment. Terri Rohlfing, CMU adjunct professor of English and theater, who creates costumes during the school year for plays and operas, will once again dress the cast for their roles.
